Chimney Cleaning FAQs
The New Zealand Fire Service recommends having your fire swept and inspected annually. Your insurance company may also require yearly cleaning. Some fires may need additional cleans as what you burn and how you run your fire can make a difference.
Open fire - $109
Log burner - $99.
Coal range - from $120
Please add $10 if you live in outer areas such as Akaroa, Methven, Castle Hill etc.
A straight forward clean and inspection takes around 30-40 minutes. If you have a blockage or birds nest that can't be cleared as part of a standard clean, the extra time required may be subject to an extra charge, depending on the difficulty of removal.
Yes, we do get on the roof. While many chimneys can be cleaned from the inside up, we believe a top-down clean is the most effective method. If a chimney is only cleaned from the bottom, soot and debris often get pushed up into the cowl (the “hat”). This may not cause issues straight away, but after a couple of years it can block the cowl entirely, leaving you with a clean flue but a chimney that won’t draw properly.
By cleaning from the top down, we ensure both the flue and the cowl are clear. In fact, most of our cleans are done this way, and some models require it. There are some situations where we may clean from the bottom up.
There are far too many different makes and models for us to carry these parts. If your fire needs new bricks, baffles or airtubes, please purchase them from your supplier and we will fit them for you at the time of cleaning. There is no extra charge.
We do carry door and glass rope for most models so we can replace yours if required.
Yes, we can bird proof the cowl / hat for you to keep birds from nesting in the flue. The cost is $35 - $65 depending on the type of cowl you have.
Yes, we can do repairs. Depending on the complexity, many repairs are done at no extra charge
Yes, it's fine to have the fire going the night before, but please remember not to light it on the morning of cleaning or the flue will be too hot to be serviced. We will need to reschedule your booking and you may be subject to a call out fee.
We will email you an invoice on the night of service which can be paid via internet banking or credit card (please note there is a fee added for credit card payments.) We also accept cash at the time of service. We do not accept cheques.
At Clean Sweep Chimney Cleaning, we know how important it is to look after every part of your home — and that includes your gutters. That’s why we now offer professional gutter and spouting cleaning alongside our chimney services.
Here’s why keeping gutters clear matters:
Prevent blockages – When gutters are clogged, water can back up and cause drains to overflow. Fixing underground drainage isn’t cheap, and stagnant water is never good for health or hygiene.
Protect your home – Overflowing water can find its way inside walls, damaging plaster, insulation, and even flooring.
Look after exterior fixtures – Blocked gutters often mean rotting barge boards, damaged soffits, or rusting guttering — all costly to repair.
Keep things looking tidy – No one wants to see grass or weeds growing out of their gutters. A quick clean keeps your home looking cared for.
Create a healthier home – In New Zealand, dampness and mildew are common issues. Free-flowing gutters help keep your house drier and healthier.
Regular cleaning can add years to the life of your guttering and save you from bigger repair bills down the track. When we’re on site, we’ll also keep an eye out for any potential roof or water issues and let you know if something needs attention.
Gutters should be cleaned at least once a year but it may vary based on your location and surroundings.
Our service includes cleaning debris from gutters and downpipes, ensuring proper flow and cleaning up any mess created during the service.
Our standard gutter cleaning prices are based on the size of your home:
Up to 100m² – $165 (incl. GST)
101–150m² – $195 (incl. GST)
151–200m² – $230 (incl. GST)
201–250m² – $265 (incl. GST)
Most homes fall within the ranges above, but pricing may vary if access is particularly difficult (e.g. steep roofs, multi-story properties, or limited ladder access).
When working out your price, a few key factors come into play:
Access & height – Single-story homes with easy-to-reach gutters are quicker and safer to clean. Multi-story or tricky access can require extra safety measures.
Extent of cleaning required – Gutters with light build-up are faster to clear than those clogged with years of debris.
Size & layout – Larger homes or properties with complex rooflines and long gutter runs take more time.
Special requests – Extra services or custom requirements may affect the final quote.
We’ll always confirm the final price with you before starting work, so there are no surprises.
We use Google Maps and Google Earth to help us supply you with an estimated cost. We'll then email you our quote, which is valid for 30 days. Please email your address to office@cleansweep.net.nz.
